How to improve concentration at work: tips and tricks

Do you find yourself getting restless, distracted, or overwhelmed at work? At some point, everyone has felt their concentration and focus slip at work and unfortunately, this can really hinder performance and productivity during the workday. So let’s go on to learn some tips and tricks on how to improve your concentration at work that you can use before and during your workday.

How to improve concentration and focus before your workday even begins

Get quality sleep

Needless to say, if you arrive at work running on only a few hours of sleep and caffeine, you won’t be on top of your game at work. It is crucial to try to get 7-8 hours of quality sleep each night so that you can be focused and feeling great at work. This way, instead of struggling to stay awake and finding yourself dozing off in the middle of a meeting or an email, you can make the best of the time you have at work, improve your performance, and feel better overall.

Get some movement in

One of the most important things you can do before you start your workday is get some movement in. Luckily, there are many options to choose from depending on how active you want to be and what you feel best doing. You don’t have to spend two hours at the gym, but getting at least 20 minutes of movement in is one of the best ways on how to improve focus and concentration at work. For a full exercise routine you can, for example, head to the gym, attend an exercise class, or do a HIIT routine at home. If you feel best getting some simple movement in and saving your exercise for later in the day, you could go for a walk, stretch and/or do yoga at home.

Overall, giving yourself the time to focus on your health, reduce stress, and wake up your body and mind is a much better alternative than waking up, and rushing to get ready and get to work.

How to improve concentration and focus at work

Keep your workspace organized

Having a cluttered workspace can be disruptive to your work and make it all too easy to spend time searching for misplaced papers or a note rather than your task at hand. If you keep your workspace organized (including your email!), you seamlessly eliminate distractions and enable yourself to concentrate on your work rather than your mess.

Maintain a ‘to do’ and ‘priorities’ list

When task items pile up throughout the day, a maintained ‘to do’ list with a ‘priorities’ section will help you arrange your day according to business needs. Add items as your day goes on and be sure to tick off those high priority items first! It is easy to postpone high priority tasks for others that take less time/effort, but if you tackle those that need to be done first, you’ll find your days and weeks run much more smoothly.

Limit distractions

Distractions are plenty at work, with plenty of chatter around the office, incoming calls and messages, and web browsing. So if you are wondering how to improve concentration at work and want to take a significant step, take action to limit distractions wherever possible. For example, you can wear headphones to reduce noise, mute your phone, or even block certain websites during business hours. There are many ways you can take action to reduce the amount of distractions you have. Set a timer for work breaks so you can recharge and give those distractions a purpose!

It takes some time to make a habit, so take the time to incorporate what works of these tips for you to boost your concentration and make you feel better overall while at work.
