How to Let Go Of the Past

Everyone has some sort of story in their past that they wish they could forget, or they wish that everyone else would forget about. It may cause them pain because it was an emotional event that shaped the rest of your life, or it may be something that cases pain because of a mistake that you made when you were younger. The key is that you have to learn how to let go of the past in order to live in the future and not let these issues hold you back from your true potential.

How Do you Heal Emotionally?

The key to letting go of your past is to start healing emotionally. But, how do you do this? It is hard, there is no denying this. It may be harder than anything that you have ever done physically, because this is more of a mental game. You want to examine the past experience that has hurt you. From there, you need to examine this and ensure that you are being honest with yourself. Being honest with yourself is the only way that you are truly going to heal. So, be honest and take the time that it really takes to examine these events. There is no time frame on how long this should take, for some people they take a few days, others take years to start healing emotionally.

5 Tips to Let Go of Your Past

There are several tips that you can use to help you let go of your past. A few of these include:

  1. If you wronged someone else in the past and this is why you are suffering, then by all means take the time to deal with this and apologize. Ask for forgiveness from this person to start letting go of all these issues.
  2. Examine the real reason as to why something happened. Was this your fault? If so, what did you learn from this mistake? If this was due to another person’s actions, you need to forgive this person and let it go.
  3. Remember that dwelling on this is not going to help anything. This is the exact opposite of letting go of the past and will make it impossible to go into the future.
  4. Don’t keep bringing up the issue with other responsible parties, if there is someone else. You will find that in doing so, it is like opening up a fresh wound each time.
  5. Take time to do some sort of meditative practice that helps you to lower your own stress and emotional levels to grow.
