Feeling Hungry After a Workout: Is It Normal?

For those who workout, you may have experienced this feeling that you are starving after working out. It is something that a lot of people experience. The key is that there is a reason why you experience this hunger after you do a workout. It can make many people go ahead and binge eat after their workout, which will make them feel guilty and it starts an unhealthy cycle.

Is It Normal To Feel Hungry After Working Out?

So, is it normal to feel hungry after workout out? It most definitely is. In fact, most people do. So, this is not unusual. But, why does this happen? There are several reasons. It can be that you are dehydrated so your body is telling you that you are hungry when in reality, you need fluids. In other cases, it can be a case of depleted glycogen levels, or the fact that you didn’t eat the right types of food before you starting workout out.

How To Prevent Post-Workout Binge Eating

While feeling hungry after a workout is common and almost everyone has felt this at one point in their lives, the key to preventing a post-workout binge eating fest is to make sure that you are doing a few things to prevent this from happening. Here are a few tips:

  • Be sure that you are hydrated. Remember, to go into you workout hydrated and then after the workout, rehydrate to affect confusing this for hunger.
  • You can have a snack after a workout to help with hunger...the key is choosing the right kind of snack. You will want to choose something that is rich in protein and carbs to help with muscle recovery while also helping you to feel full. For example, some wholegrain crackers with peanut butter and banana is great, or even eating some crackers with tuna or turkey.
  • Eat your post workout meal at least 30 to 60 minutes after the workout. This may take some planning prior to your workout and change your schedule slightly, but it will help you to avoid that binge eating that many people do once a workout is complete.

Most importantly, after a workout, if you are feeling hungry, examine this hunger. Is it real hunger or this is just cravings? Don’t fall to the cravings and ruin all the progress that you have found.
