Complex Carbs vs. Simple Carbs: What’s the Difference?

Are carbs good or bad for you? There seems to be a mixed idea of what works for you and what is going to hinder your weight loss goals. There are two types of carbs. These are simple carbs and complex carbs. Should you eat both? Avoid both? Or use both in moderation? To understand the answers to these questions you have to understand what each is.

Complex Carbs Definition

Complex carbs are defined as carbs that have more nutrients in them, making them something that you are going to want to include in your diet. They often are considered great options for those who are trying to lose weight, as they are more filling. Some great sources of complex carbs are:

  • Fruits
  • Vegetables
  • Beans
  • Whole grains
  • Nuts

Complex carbs are the key to being healthy long-term. A few foods that you will want to make sure that you are including in your diet include:

  • Whole-wheat paste
  • Apples
  • Bananas
  • Leafy greens

These types of foods are the foundation of a healthy diet.

Simple Carbs Definition

Simple carbs are sugars. Thus, they are something that you are not going to want to overindulge in, as they can add more weight to you. Some common simple carbs include:

  • Raw sugar
  • Corn syrups
  • Fruit juice concentrate
  • Glucose

Some of the foods that these simple carbs are found in include:

  • Sodas
  • Baked goods
  • Packaged cookies
  • Breakfast cereal

These simple carb foods are something that you are going to want to avoid if you can, or at least moderate yourself on.

With carbs, you are going to find that having a diet that is rich in complex carbs is the best way to ensure that you are staying full for longer thanks to the fiber that is found in these foods. The simple carbs are something that you can have as a treat from time to time, but you are going to want to avoid making these a main meal. They are going to lead to you being more hungry sooner, and they often result in weight gain that is hard to get gone.

So to answer your question, carbs are not something that you should simply do away with in your diet. You just want to make sure that you are choosing the right type of carbs to have in your diet. Otherwise, you could see more weight gain.
