Happy Hormones: A Guide To Serotonin and Other Feel-Good Hormones

When you are in a bad mood, what do you blame? Do you plan all the stress that you are facing? Maybe something went horribly wrong in your day and it has put you into a bad mood. What surprises some people is that the hormones in their body could make it more likely to have those bad days and may make it harder for you to be happy when you have these bad days. The happy hormone, also known as, serotonin, is one hormone that can play a huge role in having less bad days.

What Is the Happy Hormone?

Serotonin is responsible for regulating the mood in a person. It can help to prevent depression and basically makes you feel happy. Thus, this is why so many people are calling this the happiness hormone. The good news is that you can produce more of this through exercising, eating carb rich foods, and even exposing yourself to sunlight. But, is serotonin the only happy hormone that you have to rely on for a good mood? No! There are several more.

Oxytocin is one hormone that is often released with physical touch, such as a hug from a loved one. This is why this is often referred to as the love hormone. And those who are in healthy and happy relationships are often in better moods. Looking to increase the oxytocin in your body? Then you find that any kind of physical affection can make this happen.

Endorphins can make you feel good and happy. They are often released during stress or discomfort, but in the end they do make you feel good and many people experience these to the point that they are happier. You can get these endorphins to release through working out or doing other reward-producing activities. Studies have shown that spicy foods can trigger the release of endorphins into the body.

Dopamine is referred to as the “feel good” hormone. This is a hormone that is associated with pleasurable sensations. You can find that this hormone can be released just through laughter. For example, read a funny joke and laugh, then dopamine may be released in your body.

The key to managing these hormones in your body is to do those things that are going to help release these into your body so that you can have that happy glow about you, even when you have a bad day.
